Senior researcher position with a research focus on native membranes and membrane protein complexes of neurons 953981

A 5-year position as senior researcher developing cryo-electron tomography, and single-particle cryo-electron microscopy with 3D reconstruction of neuronal membranes is available from February 2018, or as soon as possible after, in the laboratory of Prof. Poul Nissen located at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Aarhus University (Campus Aarhus) and the Danish node for neuroscience of the Nordic-EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine (DANDRITE, funded by the Lundbeck Foundation).

The project is part of the Proteins in Memory center of excellence (PROMEMO), funded by the Danish National Research Foundation.

Aarhus University has established state-of-the-art cryoEM facilities centered on a Titan-Krios microscope equipped with a Gatan K2 Quantum detector that will be available to the project. Further screening resources and cryoEM infrastructural networks will be available to the project. The Nissen laboratory handles many different procedures for cell growth, membrane isolation, and membrane protein solubilization and purification.

The research project will be focused on studies of large complexes and network structures of synapses associated with formation and regulation of memory. The candidate must present a strong track record and a profound knowledge of a wide range of biophysical methods of membrane protein structural biology. Prior experience with membrane protein structural biology and biophysics will be considered an advantage. The research will have a main focus on neuronal sample preparation and presentation for tomographic studies of large membrane protein complexes in native membranes or native membrane nanodiscs. Furthermore, on data acquisition and analysis for 3D structure determination. The lab management will concern the general equipment and procedures for membrane protein purification and biophysics. The position will involve teamwork and support for postdocs, PhD and MSc student projects of PROMEMO, at DANDRITE, and on cryoEM studies of membrane proteins and complexes.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

Formalities and salary range
Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
